A few years after I lost my mum, I was looking for a way to give back to the community and I came across a not-for-profit board seat. They were looking for someone with human resources experience, it was perfect.

The Lighthouse - Georgina Kelly, Author in Burlington, Ontario.

I remember walking in for the interview and being hit by two coincidences at once that told me I was meant to be there. The first was as I shook hands with the Director who was interviewing me, as we introduced ourselves she shared that her daughter’s name was also Georgina. The second was the way she said my name. It sent chills up and down my arms. Her accent was very distinct and sounded exactly like my mum. When I asked her about it she shared that she was German but had spent many years living in South Africa. My mum was also German and had worked for a few years in South Africa. The sound of the woman’s voice was comfort.

I spent a few years on that Board. It was for a place called The Lighthouse For Grieving Children. A place where kids who have lost a parent or sibling can go to be with other kids going through the same thing. I never got to meet any of the families we supported but I heard many stories about how what we did mattered and I got to see some of the amazing artwork that reflected the emotions of what those kids were going through.

I re-created a similar place in Not Part Of The Plan. An impactful special place no child should ever have to need but a safe and supportive place if they ever do.
